Diaphragmatic Hernia


Diagnosis (Screening):
Mediastinal shift and asymetric echogenesity of the lung should be checked up on the transverse section of the thorax (near four-chamber view).
differential diagnosis: cystic lung disease


Definitive diagnosis:
On the sagittal section of the thorax and abdomen, defects of the diaphragm or the continuity of herniated organs through diaphragm may be identified.

Assessment of the severity
Measurement of the lung/thorax transverse area ratio (L/T), identification of herniated organs, associated anomalies



H: heart, I: intestine, Ll: left lung, Lr: right lung, St: stomach, Sp: spine


Associated cases with severe chromosomal anomalies (13- and 18-trisomy), severe fetal hydrops, pulmonary hypoplasia due to urethral atresia and bilateral renal agenesis etc, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, severe CNS disorders are contra-indication.
